Last weekend, the streets of Barcelona pulsed with more than just scientific discovery—the Interdisciplinary Rockband took over the open-air stage at IRB Barcelona’s Science Festival, proving that rock ‘n’ roll and research make an electrifying combo.
As part of the institute’s annual Open Day, which transforms the campus into a hub of discovery and interactive fun, the Interdisciplinary Rockband delivered a high-energy set in a cordoned-off section of the city, bringing an unexpected but wildly welcomed dose of live music to the festivities. With instruments provided by Shine Music Rental, the band had everything they needed to power through their setlist and get festival-goers moving.

For bands playing at festivals—especially in pop-up street performances—renting instruments makes perfect sense. Take a drum kit, for example: transporting a full set across town (or even across the country) can be a logistical nightmare, requiring space, careful handling, and a lot of heavy lifting. With a rental service like Shine Music, the band could show up, plug in, and focus on delivering an unforgettable performance instead of worrying about gear transport and setup.
Beyond convenience, rental instruments also ensure professional quality sound—a huge plus for outdoor performances where the acoustics can be unpredictable. Shine Music Rental provided the band with top-tier gear, helping them keep their sound crisp and powerful, even in the open air.

The Interdisciplinary Rockband isn’t just any group of musicians—they’re a fusion of scientists and researchers who channel their creativity into both the lab and the stage. Their setlist, much like their scientific work, was a dynamic mix of influences, proving that innovation isn’t limited to one field. As festival-goers swayed to the beat and researchers momentarily swapped their lab coats for leather jackets (at least metaphorically), it became clear: science and music share more in common than you’d think—collaboration, creativity, and a whole lot of passion.
IRB Barcelona’s Open Day is all about breaking down barriers between science and the public. Thanks to the Interdisciplinary Rockband and their killer live performance, this year’s festival wasn’t just about exploring the future of research—it was about feeling the rhythm of discovery, one power chord at a time.
